what duties and responsibiities should a substitute teacher be ready to face?

my county has a lot of openings for substitute teachers. my friend is looking to get a job with the school system. She seems to think that this is just merely a easy ';child sitting'; type job and won't have to do anything. However, I believe that before she applies she must know somehing about leadership and structure in the classroom. What does a substitute teacher do?
